The year’s penultimate Medal got underway in slightly overcast conditions but, thankfully, without the wind that we have been experiencing in Rutland lately. Steve Burgon, playing off fourteen, dropped just three shots in the front nine to finish with a gross 82, nett 68 to take the win in division one and the overall Medal. Steve said that he found it tougher on the back nine but just persevered with his game plan. Carl Causbrook was second with a nett 72 and Chris Wheatland took third spot with a 73. Club Captain Trevor Smith won the division’s lowest gross.
Bruce Strickland, playing off twenty, won division two with a nett 70. Adrian Cunningham followed up his win in last week’s Order of Merit with a 71 to take second place on countback from Fred Aspin, who also won the division’s lowest gross.
The Club Captain’s Dinner last Friday night was a roaring success, with sixty nine people attending. The evening started with Club Captain Trevor Smith and former Captains being piped in by Greetham Valley member David Smith in full regalia. Those present were members, former Captains plus a dozen members from Burghley Park Golf club. Former Manchester City and England footballer Tommy Booth was the guest speaker, he entertained the room with tales of his football career for over an hour. Trevor said that he was overwhelmed and very grateful for the support he has experienced from everybody this year. Over £300 was also raised for the Captains’ charity.
Jack Vernal, off sixteen, had an extraordinary round in the Seniors’ November Medal on Monday. Despite the heavy and persistent rain, he dropped just eight shots to win division one and to take the overall Medal. Jack was the only player in both divisions to finish under par. He scored a nett 64 and also won the lowest gross. Fourteen handicapper Barry Shaw was placed second on countback ahead of John Taylor, they both scored a nett 75.
In division two, the top three all came in with a nett 83 and were separated on countback. Tom McGrath took first place, second went to Derek Palmer who also won the lowest gross. David Evans off twenty three was third.
For the first time since its inception, Order of Merit points were awarded to players who had registered and paid their Merit entry fee in the weekend’s November Medal. Adrian Cunningham heads the field again for the second week, sharing the lead and 45 merit points with Fred Aspin after they both came in with a nett 71. Carl Causbrook was third and Chris Wheatland who had another steady week was fourth ahead of Kevin Burdall, Alan Bennett, Ben Miles and George Grant all on 74. Adrian now extends his lead in the Order of Merit by almost 35 points over Chris Wheatland, Kevin Burdall moves up to third place. Fred Aspin jumps from twentieth place to fourth. Graham Smith, who won week one, rounds off the top five.
