Vice Captain Shaun rises to the challenge of the cold

Shaun DenholmVice Captain Shaun Denholm who will take over as Captain on the 1st January won this week’s Winter Order of Merit for the first time this series. Shaun, playing off fourteen, dropped just four shots in the front nine and amassed 21 points. He got off to a bad start on the back nine with a double bogie on the par three 10th and a bogie on the next hole but stopped the rot with a par on the 12th. He came back with 17 points to give him a total of 38. Shaun was one of the first of the 40 players out and had an anxious wait to see if it would be enough to take the win. Two 36s came in and a 37 but his score was good enough in the end to take the win and the 50 points on offer for first place. A delighted Shaun said that he was surprised that 38 was good enough but a lot of players seemed to have struggled in the very cold two club wind; he had two shots taken off his handicap.

Second place went to Fred Aspin who came in with 37 points and was cut by one shot. Adie Cunningham, who has led since round two, was third on countback with 36 points, he was docked point five. Kev Hingle also came in with 36 and took fourth place. The next two places were also decided on countback after both players scored 35. Carl Causbrook took fifth ahead of Chris Wheatland.

Adie Cunningham continues to lead the overall table with a 161 points. Kev Hingle moved up from fourth place to second some 48 points back. Just one point two behind him is Graham Smith who dropped from the second spot. Fred Aspin moves up from seventh to fourth just point eight behind Graham. Last series winner Steve Anderson dropped from third to fifth place, he has ninety six points.

There is no Order of Merit next week as a lot of players are in the Christmas Texas Scramble, the next round will be on the 21st December.
