The recent news that the RAF base at Cottesmore is, from summer 2012, going to become an Army base, is very welcome. Rutland will badly miss our friends and colleagues at RAF Cottesmore, who will finally depart the base in March; many have been staunch supporters of local businesses, retailers and clubs, and we wish them all well, wherever they may be based.
A good sized contingent from Cottesmore were members of or played regularly at Greetham Valley Golf Club and are transferring to golf courses nearer their new bases – Leuchars is a bit far to nip back to Rutland for a quick round on a Sunday morning, especially with St Andrews on your doorstep!
However, Rutland – and Greetham Valley – can now look forward to welcoming the boys and girls from 2nd Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, who will relocate from Cyprus to make Cottesmore their new home from next July. They will be joined in 2013 by 7 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, relocating from Germany. We have already received several enquiries from keen Army golfers currently serving overseas about membership of Greetham Valley Golf Club in anticipation of their move to Rutland. Our new LifeStyle membership seems to be of particular interest, as does not having to pay a joining fee.
It has been interesting to see that some have already played several times at Greetham Valley in the regular Army Golf Days; for others, our two golf courses will be brand new and challenging experiences – what a treat they have in store!
We look forward to welcoming both Regiments to Rutland and to Greetham Valley. Here’s to a mutually appreciative friendship!
