A few days earlier, it was decided that if Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale et al, could have Christmas specials then Greetham Valley should have one too! So thirty two hardy, dedicated souls turned up to play in an Order of Merit Christmas Special on a day when the climate was as different to New Year’s Day as chalk and cheese. The weather in Rutland that day was as cold as it could be without actually having a layer of frost. The wind was howling in excess of 40 miles an hour and if you add in quite heavy rain, conditions could all be described as more than a little miserable. However, it was just after Christmas and most people were just glad to get out of the house, the shopping and the washing up and into the fresh air.
Some players did struggle in the inclement conditions but winner John Sparks seemed to take it all in his stride and came in with the top score on the day of 39 points. The ever dependable Graham Smith took second spot on countback from Peter Bagshaw, both scoring 38 points. Fourth and fifth were also decided on countback, Steve Anderson took fourth from Andrew Queen, they both scored 37 points. The final place was taken by Ian Cunningham with 36 points.
The first Order of Merit of 2012 will be on the 8th of January.
