Members from twenty four different golf clubs were represented in the annual Greetham Valley Seniors’ Open. Played on the Valley course off white tees, the course was set up for a tough test of the competitors’ golfing skills. The weather had changed from the 33 degree heat experienced by all of Rutland over the weekend, overcast, very muggy conditions, with several bouts of very welcome drizzle for the early starters, however, after the first three hours it soon turned into yet another hot sultry sunny day.
Some competitors struggled with the pace of the greens and the tough pin placements but the duo of Adrian Ennett and Mike Clark from Thorpe Wood Golf Club seemed to have no problems with anything that the course could throw at them. The pair had nineteen points on the front nine which included a birdie on the tough par three 7th for Adrian, however they really got into their stride on the back nine.
Mike seemed to come out of bunkers with almost professional ease and both players had birdies and quite a few pars. They finished with a magnificent 25 points for the back nine to give them a winning score of 44 points. Mike said that this was easily his best round of the year.
Adrian, playing off 19, said that they seemed to work very well as a team: if he was struggling, Mike came in and he repaid the compliment when Mike was a little off the pace. They said that there was no big secret to the way that they played on the day, they play together quite a lot and know each others’ game well and it helped that the Valley course is one of their favourites. The pair had an anxious two hour wait before the final competitors came in, with several trips to the scoreboard to keep up to date, but eventually they won by two points.
Former Greetham Valley Captains Neil Harris and Bob Beverley also fitted in well together and came in with 44 points, Neil played the back nine without dropping a shot only for the pair of them to be disqualified for a mistake on the scorecard: the score on one hole had been put down to the wrong player thus making their score invalid.
Second place went to Mike Stephens and Graham Nickerson from Peterborough Milton with 42 points. The next three places were settled on count back after five players came in with forty one points.
Dave Smith and Martin Gee, another Thorpe Wood pairing were third, Brian Marriot and Ed Markham from Boston were fourth and David Tasker and Geoff Moyses from Spalding were fifth. The Longest Drive on the par five 12th was won by Tom Jolley from Tydd St. Giles and Roger Tacq from Ramsey won Nearest the Pin on the 18th, taking it from Greetham Valley’s Captain Jim Wheeler who had held it for most of the competition.
Mike Churchill did his usual impeccable organisation to ensure that the day went without a hitch. Seniors’ Captain Peter Macdonald Pearce said that he was pleased to see so many players from different clubs competing when so many other clubs seem to be struggling to attract a good field in similar events.
