Being just a few minutes’ drive from the birds and wildlife at the renowned Rutland Water Nature Reserve, Greetham Valley is the perfect venue to stay for those keen on birdwatching. We offer a choice of hotel or self catering accommodation to suit most requirements throughout the year. And please make sure to ask about our year-round discounts for RSPB members and Wildlife Trust members!
New for this year, we are delighted to offer Winter 2015 Birding Packages in conjunction with the lovely people at Rutland Water Nature Reserve. These are especially aimed at people who are relatively new to the pleasures of birdwatching, and include practical advice, talks and guided walks from experts in the field.
Why not visit the Egleton Birdwatching Centre at Rutland Water, home of the Rutland Osprey Project? We are delighted that this wonderfully successful Project, expecting its’ 100th egg this year, has again chosen to team up with Greetham Valley to offer exciting three day Rutland Osprey Tour Packages for summer 2015, from just £105.50 per person!
Rutland Water is also the place to be in mid-August every year, for the largest Bird Fair in the world. Dates for 2015 are Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd August. Accommodation is booked up well ahead each year and we now have limited availability – don’t miss out, phone Reservations on 01780 460444!
Greetham Valley is committed to promoting a suitable, welcoming habitat for a wide range of birds. One of our members, Phil, is a keen ornithologist and regularly reports his sightings and suggestions to us. We have erected 8 owl and 8 kestrel boxes on the estate, all of which have been occupied – not necessarily just by owls or kestrels, although we do know that at least one barn owl chick was raised at Greetham Valley last year!

We are particularly delighted to have a variety of birds of prey nesting at or close by Greetham Valley – red kites seem to be prevalent, kestrel and buzzard have been spotted too. The sight of Rutland Water’s ospreys fishing our lakes for breakfast and high tea always causes a great deal of excitement, stopping our golfers and hotel guests in their tracks!
Simon Tebbutt Falconry offers a fabulous experience handling owls, hawks and an eagle at Greetham Valley. Our particular favourite is the very expressive Errol, the Great Grey Owl!

On Lord Gainsborough’s estate next door to us and just a 15 minute walk away are the lovely, tranquil Fort Henry Ponds, home to swans and myriads of other birds and wildlife. Follow the path from Greetham Valley south alongside the golf course then cross the brook, up and down the steep stepped bank, and through Toll Bar Spinney and Osprey Wood. Here’s a link to Fort Henry Ponds.
