From ospreys to wrens – birdwatching in Rutland
Being just a few minutes drive from the birds and wildlife at the renowned Rutland Water nature reserve, Greetham Valley is the perfect venue to stay for those keen on birdwatching. We offer a choice of hotel or self catering accommodation to suit most requirements throughout the year. And please make sure to ask about our winter discounts for RSPB members!
Why not visit the Egleton Birdwatching Centre at Rutland Water, home of the Osprey Project? Rutland Water is also the place to be in mid-August every year, for the largest Bird Fair in the world. Accommodation is booked up well ahead each year – don’t miss out!
Greetham Valley is committed to promoting a suitable, welcoming habitat for a wide range of birds. One of our members, Phil, is a keen ornithologist and regularly reports his sightings and suggestions to us. We have erected 8 owl and 8 kestrel boxes on the estate, all of which have been occupied – not necessarily just by owls or kestrels, although we do know that at least one barn owl chick was raised at Greetham Valley this year!
We are delighted to have a variety of birds of
prey nesting at or close by Greetham Valley – red kites seem to be prevalent, Phil has spotted merlin and kestrel too. The sight of Rutland Water’s ospreys fishing our lakes for breakfast and high tea has caused a great deal of excitement, stopping our golfers and hotel guests in their tracks!
