Gents Winter League & Annual Seniors’ Dinner

The bad weather seems to have stopped us all in our tracks!

Gents Winter League

The Gents Winter League takes place over the winter months in the form of pairs matchplay golf. With four leagues of ten teams each team plays all others with the top two pairs in each league progressing to the quarter finals. Round 2 was played on the Valley course at the weekend on a very windy day with wet conditions under foot. With two sets of matches played a number of teams seem to be equally matched and there is still all to play for.

In the first round, which was played previously, last year’s winners, Ian Bain and Dave Morgan, were surprisingly beaten but they now seem to have upped their game coming in with a convincing 6 and 5 victory in over James Ablett and Sam McCall. Harry Sargood and Tom McGrath, having also lost in the first week, scored a solid 5 and 3 victory over Fraser Denholm and John Sparks whilst the other big win of the day went to Dave Copley and Tony Mould (also losers in the first week) who won 5 and 4 against Bob Scrafton and Ted Burke.

Annual Seniors’ Dinner

At the weekend, over 80 Seniors, partners and guests attended the annual Seniors’ Dinner which is always well attended. Having been provided with more than sufficient food and wine during an excellent dinner, outgoing Seniors’ Captain Peter Wood entertained everybody with a speech interspersed with 60s and 70s style musical inserts which summarised his year. Excerpts of old favourites such as “It might as well rain until September”, “With a Little Help from My Friends” and “I Don’t Like Mondays” gave everybody an idea of how much (or little) he enjoyed various aspects of his time.
