Smith, Smith & Smith…

It helped to be called Smith at Greetham Valley on Saturday 10th – a trio of Smiths were on the winning line as Graham Smith, Adam Smith and Rory Smith (all unrelated) took the first three places in the June Medal competition. Playing in blustery, but fine, conditions Graham (6) played a masterful round, dropping only two shots on the outward half and going one better on the return; with two birdies on the front half and a hot putter Graham needed only 11 putts to reach the turn on 37 gross. On the back nine he continued to match the card although a three putt on the 13th annoyed him; for good measure he chipped in on the last to total only 24 putts for the round and a nett score of 69. Second place went to Adam Smith (21) who beat namesake Rory on countback with a nett 72; Adam was playing the front half very steadily, at well under his handicap, until he tripled the final two holes of the nine. On the back nine he recalibrated his game and although he struggled on the 15th and 16th two earlier pars gave him a cushion to maintain his run in and take second place. The third Smith at the top of the table, Rory (5), scored two birdies on the front half but blotted his card with a double bogey on 8 to turn at 3 over; he recorded 8 pars on the back half and only dropped two shots when he doubled the 13th.
