The finals of most of the Club competitions have now been held, with just two or three still to be decided. Paul Clegg won the 0-13 Singles Final on Saturday, beating Ian Hempsall three and two. Paul was in action again the next day with wife Sue in the Mixed Doubles but this time lost to an in form Ryan Tarrant and Jackie Friend by five and four. Paul was disappointed but Sue was very happy to have got this far as she only joined the club with her first handicap of 36 in April. Bill Skinner beat Steve Wilcockson to win the 14-28 Division Singles. John Taylor won Division One of the Seniors’ Singles, beating Ken Porter four and three. John thought that he had played his best golf in the semi final when he beat 5 handicapper Neil Harris but Ken said that they had a great game and the standard was very high. Despite going out of bounds with his tee shot, Peter Morris bounced back from that to beat Mike Pare on the eighteenth to win the division two title. Neil Harris recovered from his loss to John Taylor and together with partner Bob King won the Seniors’ Doubles Final, beating Joe Ball and Seniors’ Vice Captain Rod Wells. The father and son partnership of Gary and Steven Graham beat Junior Captain Ryan Tarrant and father Gareth in the Family Doubles Final.
The Ladies’ Finals were put on hold as Sophie Beardsall and Emma Tipping, who both feature in them, have been on duty for Lincolnshire in the County Finals at East Devon Golf Club. Sophie and Emma were part of the winning team last year but with a severely depleted squad this year, the team had to settle for third place. The girls were disappointed yet proud; they had lost their title but this was the fourth year on the trot that they had made it to the finals. Essex won the title with the tiniest of margins beating Lancashire on count back over the week, this was the first time Essex had been in the finals for thirty three years.
