Barry Daff, a founder member of Greetham Valley Golf Club, had a near fatal accident when he was hit by a car some years ago. He said that but for the efforts of the Linconlnshire Air Ambulance team who picked him up from the roadside and took him to Grantham Hospital, he would undoubtedly have died.
After many months of physio and once back to full mobility, Barry volunteered to be an Ambassador for them, having discovered that their funding is entirely charitable. It is apt that he was the one to represent the Lincolnshire Air Ambulance at this year’s Prize Presentation evening as this has been the Greetham Valley Captains’ Charity for 2011. Barry picked up a cheque for £2100 presented by Captains Bob Green and Jackie Friend.
Greetham Valley’s Lounge Bar was full to overflowing as the winners waited to be presented with their trophies. Sophie Beardsall picked up her seventh Waycot Bowl in succession as Ladies’ Club Champion. The Men’s Club Champion and winner of the President’s Putter was Dave Thompson. In the 19 to 28 Club Championships, Gavin Sanger won both the nett and gross championships. This feat was matched by Jordan Burdall: in winning the Junior Club Championship, he won the Herridge Trophy for the best gross and the Clark Shield for the best nett.
Emma Tipping won a very hard fought game against Sophie Beardsall to win the Ladies’ Singles. Between them, the two Ladies also won a bevy of medals: the Eclectic, the Ladies’ Medal Winners Trophy, the Pairs and the Greensomes Trophy. Not to mention being an integral part of the all conquering Lincolnshire County team who were crowned as the best county team in England earlier this year!
The Men’s Singles Knockout is played for in two divisions; one handicapper Sam Sharpe won division one and Steve Roche, playing off eighteen, took the second division. Also played in two divisions is the Seniors Singles: Jack Vernal won division one and Ken Upton won the second division. Jack also won the Seniors Winter League.
Ray Gladwinfield and Paul McDonald won a very tough Doubles Final to win the Begy Trophy and Mike Pare and Martin Boothman won the Seniors’ Doubles.
Ken Stewart won the Senior Golfer of the Year for the lowest average gross score over the year. At the other end of the scale, Rory Ludbrook was presented with the Junior Golfer of the Year trophy by Chis Harper. This is a highly prestigious trophy as it is not just performance based but also includes general demeanour, respect and co-operation. Rory also won the Bud Richardson Junior Scratch Trophy.
In the Colin Easson Motors competition, Valda Austin took first place in the Ladies section and Lee Cameron won the Men’s. Ryan Tarrant won the Juniors section.
Val Guy has had another successful year and won the Ladies Bunny Cup and two medals, she also came second in the Colin Easson Motors competition. After returning to the Club earlier this year Christine Edwards has excelled in matches and has been a staunch supporter of the Club, she was awarded the most improved Lady Golfer which was presented by Rosemary Thomas.
Trevor Smith and Sheila Douty were unveiled as the Club Vice Captains for 2012. Peter Macdonald-Pearce will be Seniors’ Captain and Ryan Tarrant was confirmed as Junior Captain.
