Torksey pair win Greetham Valley Seniors’ Open

The Seniors Open was played on the Lakes course on Monday and the dry if surprisingly blustery weather in no way impeded the scoring. Playing off 90% handicaps in a pairs better-ball competition there were numerous scores in excess of 40. The highest home team pairing of Graham Smith and George Brand took third place with 44 points, winning that place on countback from three other pairs. The overall winning score of 47 points was scored by Tony Fell (23) and Mike Hook (22) from Torksey who scored consistently around the course with 23 points on the front nine and 24 over the second half.

On Wednesday the Ladies took advantage of the fine weather to play a Texas Scramble format with teams of four competing. The sunny conditions allowed high scoring for a change and 7 teams took to the course. Second place went to Bryony Batch, Rita Knapp, Angela Wheeler & Gilly Grant with nett 60.8 but the overall winners were Liz Haughton , Ellie Haughton, Bev Dolman & Jackie Friend with nett 60.2.

The 2nd Team played Toft on Saturday at Greetham and produced a fine 5 and 1 win in spite of the weather. Andy Bass and Dave Pritchett were back to winning ways with a 2 and 1 victory whilst Carl Causbrook and Paul Jenkinson (making a welcome return) won 2 and 1. Dean Wilkinson and Tom Haynes eventually went down 2 and 1 after a hard fought game which swung forwards and backwards over 18 holes. Ally McNaughton and Dave Pusch won 2 and 1 whilst Jon Herbert and Dave Thomson had a fine win by 5 and 4. Team captain Mark Mousley, who rattled in several birdies, and Dave Morgan eased home by 5 and 3.

The Seniors played a match at Greetham Valley against Belton Woods on the Lakes course and romped home with a fine 4 and 2 victory. Captain Mel Clarke seems to have a knack of picking partners who support him well over the eighteen holes and this week was no exception as he played with Neil Bradbury.  Vice-captain John Morfee had the misfortune to be playing against a very strong pairing from Belton and was unable to prevent a loss at the bottom of the fixture.
